Paul Eric Johnson studied Zoology at the University of Massachusetts, but then left a position teaching Biology for an indeterminate trip up North America’s East Coast. Where the trains and ferries stopped, he boarded a coastal steamer and sailed among iceberg fields to visit with the Inuit of Labrador then returned with a changed sense of self, time and space, and a commitment to the photography of nature and places.

Paul’s initial involvement was with multi-media and slide shows. The Concord Conscience, a lengthy project for that town, allowed an immersion in the detail of its Revolutionary War history, as well as the philosophy and places of Henry David Thoreau. A Natural History, a large live performance piece, was a focused interpretation of the environment and its degradation from New England to Labrador. Residencies and performance for these productions and others was made possible by numerous national and state arts agencies and private foundations.

Increasingly, his attention has been to the still image and publication. Hundreds of his images have been used for text and trade books, calendars, magazines, and advertising including Time-Life, Sierra Club, Saveur, Travel & Leisure, Historic Preservation, Yankee, The Boston Globe, NBC, Polaroid, Calvin Klein, and Castlerock Entertainment.

Long a devoted darkroom printer, Paul’s work has been recognized internationally by Ilford Corporation and at Photokina in Cologne, Germany. Multiple print commissions have included The Collection of the Massachusetts Medical Society, Immulogic, and Lerner Labs/Kodak. One man shows include Moon over Boston and No Passing - Nature and New England. Currently, he has embraced the latest in digital technology for personal control of its superior qualities in color printmaking. His recent work includes a new portfolio, Re-imagine New England, which challenges our perceptions of place and reality, and An Essence Sensed for exhibition.

Most recently, he is the photographer with author Elinor DeWire for Lighthouses of the Mid-Atlantic Coast (Voyageur Press), and his fine prints are featured in Mastering Digital Printing (Muska & Lipman), the first comprehensive guide to this rapidly evolving art technique.

Paul is the Director of Photography for the Wohlfarth Galleries in Washington DC and Provincetown, Cape Cod. He teaches at the Cape Cod Photo Workshops, and is the “resident” photographer for electronicgrange.net, a cyber-cafe in Weld, Maine. His award winning web site is> www.paulericjohnson.com.
